December 12, 2025 Ratten Advent – on the way to Christmas: “Mettenschicht” at the Mining Museum
Mettenschicht – a revived tradition from the mining era
The so-called “Mettenschicht” is a very old tradition of the miners. It was the last shift before Christmas, during which the miners would gather together. The name refers to the Christmas mass that follows the last shift. There was traditional food and a festive service.
The Mining Museum and the Ratten Music Association jointly organize this traditional pre-Christmas event. The area between the musician's house and the Mining Museum will be adorned with a lit Christmas tree, open fire, and fairy lights, creating a pre-Christmas glow.
This historical 'shift', the second since the end of mining in Ratten and St. Kathrein/H. in 1960, will be accompanied by the miners' music and enriched with texts and thoughts by Christine Baumgartner and Franz Mögle.
Culinary offerings remain traditional. There will be apple or dried fruit bread and the popular Mettenjause, a lentil stew with sausage.
